珊瑚海 (Shan Hu Hai) by 周杰倫 and 梁心頤 (Jay Chou and Lara Veronin)

January 4, 2008 at 8:34 pm (** Medium, Chinese lyrics, Duets, Pinyin lyrics) (, , , , )

Jay Chou is one of my favorite singers, perhaps because he mostly stays within my vocal range, and perhaps because he has so many relatively slow ballads that are easy to follow along with. Add the amusement I get from his strange costumes, and I can almost forgive him for never smiling.

This duet is, in my opinion, one of his most beautiful songs, both in harmony and in the lyrics. Sadly, I can never get any men to sing it with me, but I still get my chance at KTV when my friend Kim puts on her Jay Chou face and delves into the lower octaves. Hopefully, by putting these lyrics up, I can encourage more men to learn the song, and I’ll finally find a guy to sing with me by the time Kim leaves Taiwan.

Note: I’ve tried to stick with the KTV theme here, so the blue lyrics should be sung by the male singer, red lyrics by the female, and green lyrics by both. If this makes the words too difficult to read, please let me know and I’ll keep it in mind for the next duet.

hai ping mian yuan fang kai shi yin mai bei shang yao zen me ping jing chun bai

wo de lian shang shi zhong jia dai yi mo qian qian de wu nai

ni yong chun yu shuo ni yao li kai (xin bu zai)

na nan guo wu sheng man le xia lai

xiong yong chao shui ni ting ming bai

bu shi lang er shi lei hai

zhuan shen li kai
(ni you hua shuo bu chu lai) fen shou shuo bu chu lai

hai niao gen yu xiang ai zhi shi yi chang yi wai

wo men de aigei de aicha yi yi zhi cun zai hui bu lai

feng zhong chen aideng daijing lei ji cheng shang hai

zhuan shen li kai fen shou shuo bu chu lai

wei lan de shan hu hai cuo guo shun jian cang bai

dang chu bi cini wo doubu gou cheng shu tan bai (bu ying gai)

ai shen mai shan hu hai

hui huai de sha diao ru he zhong lai you lie hen de ai zen me zhong gai

zhi shi yi qie jie shu tai kuai ni shuo ni wu fa shi huai

bei ke li yin cang shen me qi dai (deng hua er kai)

wo men ye yi jing wu xin zai cai

mian xiang hai feng(mian xiang hai feng)

xian xian de ai(xian xian de ai)

chang bu chu hai you wei lai

By the way, although the lyrics are not incredibly difficult, I’ve classified this song as “medium” based on the vocal demands of the song. This is one of the reasons I can never get any men to sing it with me, I’m certain.

Great blog! Please keep it up.

I like this blog! I’m also trying to learn more Chinese songs (and something Taiwanese too).
Do you think you could maybe write the pinyin in words and sentences rather than per syllable? I.e. ‘Ni yong chunyu shuo ni yao likai’ rather than ‘ni yong chun yu shuo ni yao li kai’. I think that would make it easier to read.

To all: Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying it!

To Lu: I’ll keep your suggestion in mind for the future, although I’ll stick with the current method for now. This is because, although for actual Chinese study it is better to put the compounds together, for singing purposes it is easier to keep each character separate. The rhythms of the songs don’t make a distinction between compounds and single-character words. However, if you do want to get the compounds for any song, that can be accomplished easily by pasting the lyrics into the annotation page at http://www.mdbg.net. I find that the annotation feature is fairly accurate (although sometimes it will keep characters separate when I know they should be together), and a good tool for genuine study.

Jay has written a number of other popular duets, amongst them the all time favourite 屋頂 (wuding=rooftop) was first performed by Jay’s ex-boss Jacky Wu 吳宗憲 and Landy 溫嵐. If you liked the “Coral Sea” then I’d definitely recommend that you have a go @ rooftop, too.
Jay’s ability to switch between his real voice and falsetto in my opinion is second to none and I think that’s partially the reason why many men stay right away from Jay’s songs.

anyone able to provide me the scores of this song? i want to know how the male and female parts are sung lah. thanks. terkyang@hotmail.com

most guys can’t hit the high Bb on this song (since range wise its impossible for your avg guy that doesn’t try to improve their singing) so it’s no wonder they tend to stay away from this piece ^^

and since i saw a comment on music score, feel free to e-mail me for anyone that would like the score :)

I love this song. I sing it far too many times on the way to work in the car. I am sure people look at me funny. I actually like the switches from normal to falsetto. Kind of challenging. Anyways keep up the good work.

I’ve been looking for the lyrics to this song for awhile. Thanks, now I can finally learn the words instead of humming along!!

Hi, I just stumbled on your blog while searching for nice Chinese songs. Can you recommend ‘recent’ good songs for me? :) I’m mostly stuck with my old songs dating way back to my last visit to China and would love to be updated with the new good songs out there.

Great site! :) I’m also a fan of Jay’s. His songs are really something else.

is there a way you can post only lara’s part? ’cause it’s hard to listen for her part when she’s singing with Jay.

Hi Aishenne – If you feel comfortable reading (or just fumbling around in) Chinese, I’d recommend checking out the front pages of the KKBOX or ezPeer websites to see what artists are popular from week to week. You can also hear samples for free or subscribe for a free. This is how I discover a lot of music. Another way is streaming Hit FM online and checking out their main page for their playlists (I’ll add direct links to the blog if you’re interested). Of course, these sites are based in Taiwan, so they’ll be focused on Taiwanese artists!

Hi ling – If you mean only posting the female vocals, I’m sorry but I don’t think something like that exists online. If you’re just talking about the lyrics, though, the best way is to copy and paste this post into another document and delete the blue text. Hope this helps!
