A busy life and a vacation have led to blog stagnation. In fact, last week was the first time I myself went to KTV in several months. For shame!

David Tao, possibly one of the most recognizable names in Mandarin pop music, is essentially the godfather of Taiwanese pop. Any time his name comes up in conversation with a Taiwanese friend, the response is usually something like: “You like 陶喆? He’s the original!” And they’re right – at 38, he is now an old pro, and yet his original songs (like this one, from his debut album) can still be heard frequently on the radio and drifting out of storefronts in Taipei. Amusingly, despite looking like something from the early 80’s, this video is from the late 90’s. A more modern version is available here, but I chose this one because of its camp and because the lyrics on screen are easier to read.

I’m completely swamped with events for VDAY, so this isn’t a lyrics post, but I couldn’t let a moment go by without sharing this absolutely genius video. If you like the video for Tong Hua (original post), you’ll love this video. I was hoping it would include the nosebleed, but the section beginning at 3:40-ish is just perfect. By the way, it’s got subtitles of the English translation of the lyrics.

This is another song that I learned primarily through going to KTV. The video is really cute (I like the convenience store bits the best), and the song is easy to learn. At the very least, it can help you get your directions down… left, right, up, and down. By the way, the original was by the Malaysian singer 阿牛 (A Niu), but Taiwanese singer Richie Ren made it popular.

A good friend introduced this song to me a long time ago, and it’s the first song I learned solely through hearing it at KTV. It’s old, but a really nice song to sing with friends. It’s always one of my top picks at KTV.
