記得(Ji De) by 張惠妹 (A-Mei)/ 2010 cover by 林俊傑 (JJ Lin)

February 11, 2011 at 3:03 pm (** Medium, ** Medium, Chinese lyrics, Cover songs, Female Singers, Male Singers, Pinyin lyrics) (, , , , , , , , )

JJ Lin (林俊傑) was awfully clever to cover this popular song, which he originally wrote for A-Mei (張惠妹) in 2001. A-Mei’s version still tops the charts at KTV, even 10 years later, and the song is also a popular choice for competitors on Taiwan’s ubiquitous idol shows. Sure, the song has already been covered by such big names as Khalil Fong (方大同) and Jam Hsiao (蕭敬騰), but Lin’s voice has the strength to carry the song that Fong’s does not, and Hsiao’s unique sound is a mismatch for the quiet sadness of A-Mei’s classic (not to mention the drums in Hsiao’s version are a bit much). It’s a challenge to remake a song whose original is so popular, but Lin has managed it quite well.

Learners of Chinese will find this song to be only moderately challenging. It does require a solid foundation for common characters, but there are few difficult words/characters in the song. As for the vocals, the lower key of JJ Lin’s version is manageable for both men and women, but women can consider trying out A-Mei’s version for a challenge. Below are both versions. Enjoy!

Chorus:

shei hai ji de  shi shei xian shuo  yong yuan de ai wo

yi qian de yi ju hua  shi wo men yi hou de shang kou

guo le tai jiu  mei ren ji de  dang chu na xie wen rou

wo han ni shou qian shou  shuo yao yi qi  zou dao zui hou

wo men dou wang le  zhe tiao lu zou le duo jiu

xin zhong shi qing chu de you yi tian you yi tian dou hui ting de

rang shi jian shuo zhen hua    sui ran wo ye hai pa

zai tian hei le yi hou  wo men dou bu zhi dao  hui bu hui you yi hou

Chorus 1 x

wo men dou lei le  que mei ban fa wang hui zou

liang ke xin dou mi huo  zen me shuo  zen me shuo dou mei you jiu

qin ai de wei shen me  ye xu ni ye bu dong

liang ge xiang ai de ren  deng zhe dui fang xian shuo xiang fen kai de li you

Alternate chorus:

shei hai ji de ai qing kai shi bian hua de shi hou

zou de tai yuan zhong yu zou dao fen cha lu de lu kou

shi bu shi ni he wo yao you liang ge xiang fan de meng

Chorus 1x

wo han ni shou qian shou  shuo yao yi qi zou dao zui hou

K歌之王 (K Ge zhi Wang) by 陳奕迅 (Eason Chan)

March 4, 2010 at 6:24 pm (** Medium, Chinese lyrics, Male Singers, Pinyin lyrics) (, )

If I were ever to come across my KTV-loving soul mate somewhere out in cyberspace, he’d probably have a KTV blog named after this Eason Chan classic, which translates to “King of KTV“. This song is a favorite among most of my male Taiwanese friends, very likely because it’s not very vocally challenging (quite low for most of the song), and because it’s fun to sing a song about expressing your feelings through KTV while you’re actually at KTV.

The video offers great cultural insights, too. For those who have never been to a KTV, you get a decent glimpse into a KTV room and can see how it differs from western-style karaoke. And if you do actually sing this at KTV, the video can feel a bit like a mirror, particular if you’ve got rowdy friends and no one ever pays attention to your singing. (For a KTV-lover, the end of this video is just about as heartbreaking as the ones where the girl dies!)

In terms of Chinese difficulty, the vocabulary could be considered high beginner, though the song gets more difficult at the end because the final lyrics are a bit sped up. Still, highly recommended for beginners to learn, especially if you’re a guy and want to hear all of your friends say “You know this song? Wow, you must really love KTV!”

PS: If you came here looking for the Cantonese lyrics to this song, you can find the video (which isn’t nearly as interesting) here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pq0CoUwfilQ Unfortunately, however, I don’t speak Cantonese, so there is no point in my trying to put the lyrics into pinyin. Try these lyrics at Karazen instead: http://www.karazen.com/display.php?page=1&id=962.

wo yi wei yao shi chang de yong xin liang ku

ni zong hui dui wo duo dian zai hu

wo yi wei sui ran ai qing yi cheng wang shi

shei ceng jing gan dong  fen shou de guan tou cai dong de

Chorus:

wo yi jing xiang xin you xie ren wo yong yuan bu bi deng

suo yi wo ming bai zai deng huo lan shan chu wei shen me hui ku

ni bu hui xiang xin  jia gei wo ming tian you duo xing fu

zhi xiang ni ming bai wo xin gan qing yuan  ai ai ai ai dao yao tu

ai ru chao shui wo wang le wo shi shei  shi shao hai you ni ku

(Instrumental break)

wo xiang chang yi shou ge gei wo men zhu fu

wo yuan yi shi zhe liao jie cong ci yi hou

yong ji de fang jian yi ge ren de xin you duo gu du

Repeat chorus

rang wo duan le qi tie le xin ai de guo huo

Movie Music: 不能說的秘密 (Bu Neng Shuo de Mi Mi) by 周杰倫 (Zhou Jie Lun/Jay Chou)

January 18, 2010 at 4:16 pm (** Medium, Chinese lyrics, Male Singers, Movie soundtracks, Pinyin lyrics) (, , , )

Next in the soundtrack series is another song from Jay Chou. There will be a number of Jay Chou soundtrack pieces, of course, since he has scored several films in recent years.

While the instrumental pieces are arguably the most fabulous part of Jay Chou’s soundtrack to his 2007 film Secret (不能說的秘密), this title song is quite catchy, not to mention fairly easy to sing. It might even be a decent song for a KTV newbie to learn, though some of the vocabulary is a little advanced. Even better, the background music is rather simple, so it would be a good song to try out if you’re interested in showing off your singing and piano playing at the same time.

And if you haven’t seen Secret, you’re really missing out. Jay Chou’s turn at writing, directing, and starring in his own film turned out far better than one might have predicted, and is nothing like the goofy flicks he normally participates in. Especially watch out for the piano battle near the beginning of the film. Impressive!

Like Cape No. 7 did in 2008, this film won Outstanding Taiwanese Film of the Year at the 2007 Golden Horse Awards. Furthermore, this song won Best Original Film Song, beating out Sodagreen’s 小情歌 (which was featured in the film Exit No. 6, a silly movie shot in my neighborhood).

PS: Be sure to check out Jay Chou in his Hollywood debut this year, when he will star as Kato in The Green Hornet with Seth Rogen and Cameron Diaz. I can’t say I expect anything amazing, but it’s a great chance to expose America to Jay Chou, and thus to Taiwan’s music industry.

Movie Music: 無樂不作 (Wu Le Bu Zuo) by 范逸臣 (Fan Yi Chen/Van Fan)

January 18, 2010 at 2:08 pm (** Medium, Chinese lyrics, Male Singers, Movie soundtracks, Pinyin lyrics) (, , , , )

Although Van Fan was a singer before the hit movie Cape No. 7 (海角七號), it was only with the success of this 2008 film that he really skyrocketed to fame. As a result, this song was playing all over Taipei, in stores, in clubs, by cover bands, and at KTV. It has an angry rockin’ quality that most other Taiwanese music doesn’t have.

Of course, the hype over both the movie and its star have since calmed down, but Van Fan is still out there making music with his band. Expect some new things from him in 2010.

Incidentally, besides containing scenes from Cape No. 7, this video was shot on the road that swings around Taiwan’s most southern reaches. If you visit Kenting, rent a scooter and head south on the main road out of town and you’ll end up where this video was filmed. It’s a nice drive with breathtaking views, so take a camera! You can also head back north to Hengchun and see some of the locations featured in Cape No. 7.

不完整的旋律 (Bu Wan Zheng de Xuan Lü) by 王力宏 (Wang Leehom)

September 18, 2008 at 12:42 am (** Medium, Chinese lyrics, Male Singers, Pinyin lyrics, Uncategorized) (, )

The distractions that have taken me away from posting and going to KTV this summer nearly caused a regrettable situation, at least for a girl with a blog called KTV小姐. Due to my focus on other areas of my life besides music, I nearly missed the opportunity to see Wang Leehom when he comes to town this weekend. Imagine my sorrow if I hadn’t heard about it until after the concert series was over. For shame. Sadly, by the time I learned of the concert, all the good mid-priced tickets were long gone. Fortunately, I was able to talk friends into splurging on the higher-priced seats up front, which is where we’ll be singing along this Saturday at Taipei’s 小巨蛋. If you’re in town and you’d like to attend the concert, there’s still a handful of tickets up for grabs for both Friday and Saturday night, although getting good seats AND sitting next to your friends is almost an impossibility at this point. (Friends in Shanghai and Singapore, he’ll be coming your way later in 2008.)

Expect some photos from the show – at least the ones I can manage before the camera police come after me. Hmm. Since he’s on the Sony BMG label and everything in the Leehom universe (as you can see from his videos) is sponsored by Sony, do you think if I flash my Sony camera and Sony Ericsson phone that they’ll let me off?

Anyway, since it wouldn’t be logical to post a song by anyone else this week (although I had a few others in mind), here’s another song I love from Wang Leehom’s latest album. The video leaves a lot to be desired, but the song itself is very singable aside from some challenging vocabulary for beginners. Overall, it’s a sweet song with meaningful lyrics.

Special note on videos:
First of all, I do want to give props to Wang Leehom for doing the YouTube thing the smart way. His website links to a YouTube channel containing videos from his public appearances, interviews, and travels. In addition, he has an official YouTube channel, featuring 50 of his official videos. If you want to get to know Wang Leehom’s music before investing in an album or ten, this is a great place to do it. The videos are even titled in pinyin, some with English titles as well. The only thing that would make this better is if the channel contained the KTV versions.

An unfortunate consequence of this, however, seems to be that the more recent KTV videos uploaded by fans are not embeddable anymore. Some videos on this blog will no longer play automatically, and may require visiting the video’s YouTube page to actually be able to watch. The URL can be found by clicking the menu button on the embedded video (the arrow pointing up in the bottom right corner of the video).

Happy singing!

(Zao An, Chen Zhi Mei) by 盧廣仲 (Lu Guang Zhong/Crowd Lu)

August 10, 2008 at 9:26 am (** Medium, Chinese lyrics, Male Singers, Pinyin lyrics) (, , )

Crowd Lu (love this name) is a newcomer to the Taiwanese music scene, this being the popular single from his debut album, 100種生活 (Yi Bai Zhong Sheng Huo). I hope he won’t end up a one-hit wonder, as his songs are not only cute and pleasant to listen to, but also a refreshing contrast to all the pop ballads that dominate the Taiwanese music industry. Maybe that’s why I’m suddenly hearing his music flowing out of the shops all over town, rather than songs from Jay Chou’s 牛仔很忙 album, and why I keep hearing teenagers humming this song on the street. Everyone is aching for something new and different.

Incidentally, he has a concert coming up in 2 weeks. Tickets available via 年代 (Nian Dai) at http://www.ticket.com.tw/dm.asp?P1=0000008769

About this song… although it really only has one verse, one refrain, and the chorus is so easy a two-year-old could learn it, the speed of the repeated verse will be difficult for beginners.

hei! chi zao can a! kuai dian la!

dui a, dui a。 dui a, dui a。

Repeat verse and chorus 2x

越愛越難過 (Yue Ai Yue Nan Guo) by 吳克群 (Wu Ke Qun/Kenji)

June 19, 2008 at 2:46 pm (** Medium, Chinese lyrics, Male Singers, Pinyin lyrics) (, , )

I have to be honest in saying that I’ve never entirely taken 吳克群 very seriously. Perhaps it’s because he’s got a lot of songs and videos I’d classify as silly (see future post on 大舌頭), or it might just because he is so boyishly cute, despite the fact that we are exactly the same grand age of 28. However, his latest album, 為你寫詩, has really earned my respect (at least the ballads, which tend to be how I judge an artist). While the video for this song is seriously lacking (why’s he so dirty and wet?), I like the melody, not to mention the fact that the lyrics are easy for someone with at least low intermediate reading skills.

shuo   shuo ni wei shen me   wei shen me yao zou

shuo ni wei he yao fen shou

bie tuo   qiu ni bie ruan ruo   qiu ni shuo chu kou

dan ni que  tuo  tuo  tuo   tuo dao shen me shi hou

ru guo yao zou que you wei he ting liu

Chorus

ran hou wo men shuo qing chu  yi ju hua jiu gou

bie yue ai yue nan guo

Do Do Re Re Mi Mi Re Do     Do Do Re Mi Do

bie tuo   qiu ni bie ruan ruo   qiu ni shuo chu kou

fen shou de li you

(Repeat chorus)

ran hou lian huo dou bu shuo   ji xu chen mo

小情歌 (Xiao Qing Ge) by 蘇打綠 (Sodagreen)

June 8, 2008 at 11:24 am (** Medium, Male Singers, Pinyin lyrics) (, )

In my opinion, 蘇打綠 (Sodagreen) is one of Taiwan’s best musical products. Their music is a far cry from the pop that dominates the airwaves and MTV, both in lyrics and instrumentation. They also have a secret weapon: lead singer 吳青峰 (Wu Qing Feng), whose voice is both smooth and unusual (and who, incidentally, was a classmate of a friend of mine – yet another reminder of what a small place Taiwan really is). If you are in a position to easily get your hands on Chinese music, I highly recommend last year’s album You can find information on it here. My next CD purchase will probably be their new live album, out last month, which also contains a couple of new studio tracks.

This song is from Sodagreen’s 2006 album, 小宇宙, but it seems like it’s experiencing a bit of a revival recently. It’s actually a bit of a difficult song for me personally (a few of the lines are tongue twisters), but I’ll be proud if I can ever sing it well.
One special note, though. Although 吳青峰 is indeed male, many of his songs, like this one, are far out of the range of most male singers. That’s why I’m putting this into both the male and female categories.

Oh! And be sure to check out Sodagreen’s official site (below). It’s got an awesome concept.

chang zhe ren men xin chang de qu zhe

wo xiang wo hen kuai le

Kiss Goodbye by 王力宏 (Wang Leehom)

June 8, 2008 at 10:31 am (** Medium, Male Singers, Pinyin lyrics) (, )

For people who come to Taiwan without knowing how to speak Chinese, going to KTV with Taiwanese friends can be slightly frustrating. The problem is that, while you can’t sing the Chinese songs, they tend to know not only all the Chinese songs, but the English songs, too! One way of compensating is to sing along with the only English words in Chinese songs, of which there are many. It’s probably annoying to the folks actually singing the songs, but it’s something I’ve seen nearly all non-Chinese speakers do at KTV, myself included. We have to compensate somehow. Besides, it’s much easier to start learning a song for real if you know for certain that you understand two or three words.

“Kiss Goodbye” was the first of this type for me. It came out the year I arrived in Taiwan, and was on MTV and the radio all the time, so I had plenty of opportunities to hum along after the initial “baby” and then belt out the “kiss goodbye” in the chorus. Now I can sing the entire song (aside from being tripped up by a character here and there), but it still holds a place in my heart as one of the first Chinese songs I ever “sang.”

*By the way, this song is categorized as medium because, although the chorus is simple, the vocabulary in the verses is not nearly basic enough for most beginners.

Baby
Baby bu yao zai ku qi

zhe yi mu duo mo shu xi

jin wo zhe ni de shou bi ci

dou she bu de fen li

mei yi ci xiang kai kou

dan bu ru bao chi an jing

gei wo yi fen zhong zhuan xin

hao hao xin shang ni de mei

xing fu da pei bei shang

tong shi zai wo xin jiao cha

cuo zhe de yan lei

fu chu de ai shou bu hui

hai qian ni de wo bu neng gei

bie ba wo xin ye dai zou   qu gen sui

(Chorus)

mei yi ci he ni fen kai

shen shen de bei ni da bai

mei yi ci fang qi ni de wen rou   tong ku nan yi shi huai

mei yi ci he ni fen kai

每一次Kiss You Goodbye
mei yi ci Kiss You Goodbye

ai qing de zi wei ci ke wo zhong yu zui ming bai

xing fu da pei bei shang

tong shi zai wo xin jiao cha

cuo zhe de yan lei

fu chu de ai shou bu hui

hai qian ni de wo bu neng gei

wo cai ming bai ai zui zhen shi de zi wei

(Repeat chorus 2x)

改變自己 (Gai Bian Zi Ji) by 王力宏 (Wang Leehom)

April 5, 2008 at 12:11 am (** Medium, Chinese lyrics, Japanese, Male Singers, Pinyin lyrics, Taiwanese) (, )

Wang Leehom is, with Jay Chou, one of the first singers I began to listen to when I arrived in Taiwan. It would have been impossible to miss him, with his face plastered on billboard advertisements, on commercials (one of my favorites being the 黃綠紅 commercials for McDonald’s, his name being a play on words with the yellow, green, and red dipping sauces for McNuggets), and in the video for his song “Kiss Goodbye,” which played nonstop on MTV that year.

In 2007, he released his latest album, 改變自己 – Change Me, which contains this title track. It has been on my iPod since the day after I heard it, and both the message and the energetic beat make great morning music. Plus, the video is, well, incredibly cute. Enjoy!

* Notes: (1) The term kuso in the song is borrowed from Japanese, and my own translation would be: so bad, it’s good. The Back Dorm Boys are a good example of this. And yes. I love those guys. (2) This song also contains Taiwanese pronunciation – the characters 龜毛, while pronounced gui mao in Mandarin, are pronounced ku mo in Taiwanese. Although Taiwanese folks seem to generally use the Mandarin pronunciation, this term (meaning high-maintenance or nitpicky) is said to have originated in Taiwanese. The history of the term is debatable.
