(A-Mei & Jam Hsiao)

March 15, 2010 at 11:58 pm (*** Difficult, Chinese lyrics, Duets, Pinyin lyrics) (, , , , , )

It’s a big tribute to Jam Hsiao’s talents that A-Mei would put him on her album less than a year after he hit the music scene via One Million Star (超級星光大道, one of Taiwan’s popular talent shows) in 2007. In American terms, that would be like Madonna grabbing a recent American Idol contestant to join her for a duet. Of course, although he was only 20 years old at the time, Hsiao had already built a huge following through his TV appearances, and his popularity has grown since he put out 3 albums of his own in 2008 and 2009.

The song itself is beautiful, one of the best duets out there, in my opinion. I’m putting this in the difficult pile, thanks to intermediate-level vocab and vocals that do require a bit of talent for both parts.

Note: As is the custom… blue = male, red = female, and green = both together.

TV Music: 我愛他 (Wo Ai Ta) by 丁噹 (Ding Dang)

March 8, 2010 at 11:46 pm (*** Difficult, Chinese lyrics, Female Singers, Pinyin lyrics, Television soundtracks) (, )

Another TV theme song that has gotten a lot of play lately is the opener for 下一站,幸福 (Autumn’s Concerto), a popular show which only recently concluded. The video for the song is unrelated to the series, however, and stars my favorite actor from 痞子英雄 (Black & White), 修杰楷.

In terms of song difficulty, I’m rating this as difficult for two main reasons: 1) the vocabulary in it could be classified as upper intermediate, and 2) you’ll need a good vocal range to pull off this song regardless of your Chinese ability. The final chorus pushes it up to a high C#, for which most non-sopranos would have to switch to falsetto. My best advice is, if you can’t hit the high notes, change the key. This is possible via the remote control/computer at most Taiwanese KTVs and with many types of audio software. Good luck!

K歌之王 (K Ge zhi Wang) by 陳奕迅 (Eason Chan)

March 4, 2010 at 6:24 pm (** Medium, Chinese lyrics, Male Singers, Pinyin lyrics) (, )

If I were ever to come across my KTV-loving soul mate somewhere out in cyberspace, he’d probably have a KTV blog named after this Eason Chan classic, which translates to “King of KTV“. This song is a favorite among most of my male Taiwanese friends, very likely because it’s not very vocally challenging (quite low for most of the song), and because it’s fun to sing a song about expressing your feelings through KTV while you’re actually at KTV.

The video offers great cultural insights, too. For those who have never been to a KTV, you get a decent glimpse into a KTV room and can see how it differs from western-style karaoke. And if you do actually sing this at KTV, the video can feel a bit like a mirror, particular if you’ve got rowdy friends and no one ever pays attention to your singing. (For a KTV-lover, the end of this video is just about as heartbreaking as the ones where the girl dies!)

In terms of Chinese difficulty, the vocabulary could be considered high beginner, though the song gets more difficult at the end because the final lyrics are a bit sped up. Still, highly recommended for beginners to learn, especially if you’re a guy and want to hear all of your friends say “You know this song? Wow, you must really love KTV!”

PS: If you came here looking for the Cantonese lyrics to this song, you can find the video (which isn’t nearly as interesting) here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pq0CoUwfilQ Unfortunately, however, I don’t speak Cantonese, so there is no point in my trying to put the lyrics into pinyin. Try these lyrics at Karazen instead: http://www.karazen.com/display.php?page=1&id=962.

wo yi wei yao shi chang de yong xin liang ku

ni zong hui dui wo duo dian zai hu

wo yi wei sui ran ai qing yi cheng wang shi

qian yan wan yu shuo chu lai ke yi hu xiang an fu

shei ceng jing gan dong  fen shou de guan tou cai dong de

Chorus:

wo yi jing xiang xin you xie ren wo yong yuan bu bi deng

suo yi wo ming bai zai deng huo lan shan chu wei shen me hui ku

ni bu hui xiang xin  jia gei wo ming tian you duo xing fu

zhi xiang ni ming bai wo xin gan qing yuan  ai ai ai ai dao yao tu

ai ru chao shui wo wang le wo shi shei  shi shao hai you ni ku

(Instrumental break)

wo xiang chang yi shou ge gei wo men zhu fu

wo yuan yi shi zhe liao jie cong ci yi hou

yong ji de fang jian yi ge ren de xin you duo gu du

Repeat chorus

rang wo duan le qi tie le xin ai de guo huo

yi hui tou jiu zhao dao chu lu

rang wo cheng wei le wu qing de K ge zhi wang

mai ke feng dou rang wo zheng fu

xiang bu dao ni  ruo wu qi shi de shuo  zhe yang lan qing  he ku

Ways to Find & Listen to Chinese Music Online

March 1, 2010 at 3:49 am (Advice, Chinese lyrics, Notes, Pinyin lyrics, Tech Tools)

Though many people visit this site looking for pinyin lyrics for songs they already know, I often get asked how or where to find new music, so much that I probably should have written this post long before now. I’m lucky enough to live in Taipei, where you’ve only got to walk past a row of stores to get a decent dose of new music. Still, I do find a lot of new music online, so it’s time I share a few ways to do that.

The Legit Ways

Free Online Radio

  • I recommend Hit FM, a popular Taiwanese station that is usually playing in all the convenience stores. You can choose from 3 streams from different regions in Taiwan, which aren’t always airing the same content. Here’s the link:  http://www.hitoradio.com/showtime/onair_2.php
  • Another radio station, KISSRadio, broadcasts from central & southern Taiwan. To access KISS online, visit http://kissradio.kiss.com.tw/index.php. The title & artist will be displayed in the bar at the top of the page.
  • Finally, there’s POP Radio. Based in Taipei, it has basically the same content as the other pop stations (and you’ll notice its pop-up radio player is identical to Hit FM’s). For POP Radio, visit http://www.pop917.com/ and click “線上收聽” near the top.

Problem: The Hit FM or POP Radio players do not display song titles (at least according to my configuration on Firefox). If you don’t already understand a little Chinese, you might not be able to catch enough lyrics to figure out what the songs are called.

Solution: Get Shazam immediately! Why haven’t you already? If you’ve never heard of it before, Shazam is an app that “listens” to songs, analyzes them, then reports back to you the name of the song and artist, and even gives you extra stuff like YouTube links. There are some similar apps out there, but I’ve found Shazam to be the best for handling Chinese (& practically any other language).  It’s now available on lots of mobile platforms and can even be linked with Facebook.

Music Charts

There are scores of music charts out there, and most are pretty easy to navigate even if you don’t read 漢字. Once you sort out which column is the artist (usually the 3-character one) and which is the title, all you need to do is copy and paste the song title into KKBOX to track down the lyrics or into YouTube to find a video. Here are a few charts to get you started:

If you’re not satisfied with these, you can also Google “新歌排行” and you’ll end up with links to plenty more charts.

Videos

  • One of the absolute simplest ways to find new music is through YouTube. It doesn’t matter what language you’re using YouTube in, I guarantee that if you search “KTV” on YouTube, you will immediately get results for Chinese karaoke videos. Furthermore, most of the results will be by Taiwanese singers and will contain traditional characters for the lyrics. If you’re looking for a specific song, just paste in the “Chinese title + KTV” and you’ll likely get the official KTV video. Not sure about the song’s name? Try the “singer’s name + KTV” with the artist’s English name or Chinese name (pinyin or characters) and you’ll find what you’re looking for. A little search finesse is all you need.
  • A more unusual way of discovering songs through videos is with iKala.TV. For those in the west who  love karaoke but have never heard of iKala, this website will be shockingly terrific. It’s so fantastic that I have a post in the works about using the site, and may post some of my own iKala content here on this blog later on. But I’m getting ahead of myself here. What is iKala, anyway? Read the rest of this entry »

TV Music: 雨愛 (Yu Ai) by 楊丞琳 (Yang Cheng Lin/Rainie Yang)

February 2, 2010 at 9:17 pm (** Medium, Chinese lyrics, Female Singers, Pinyin lyrics, Television soundtracks) (, , )

Many songs that become popular in Taiwan are not from movies, but from the idol dramas that begin and end every couple of months. Most often, the “idols” starring in the dramas are singers who have been tossed into the acting business (or vice versa), since everyone knows that all singers can act, and all actors can sing. Obviously.

Thus, very often, the theme songs from the TV shows are sung by the stars of those programs. One of the most recent examples of this is a song which is currently popular at KTVs, 雨愛, by Rainie Yang. The song played during the closing credits of 海派甜心, a drama that just ended this past week. The show starred Rainie Yang and Alan Luo (羅志祥/小豬), and featured music by both singers.

As I add more TV theme songs in the future, I’ll do my best to include some show information for those who want it. However, if you’re really into Asian dramas (Taiwanese or otherwise), I really recommend checking out DramaWiki. It’s a decent English wiki on Asian dramas, and is usually more complete than Wikipedia itself when it comes to information in English.

***Incidentally, if you really like Rainie Yang, she’s expected at Riverside Live House in Ximending at 3pm this Saturday (February 6) to promote her new album. Riverside has no info on their website, but some info is here (Chinese): http://www.sonybmg.com.tw/pop/rainie/p2.php

Movie Music: 我的名字 (Wo de Ming Zi) by 伍佰 (Wu Bai)

January 27, 2010 at 12:03 am (* Easy, Chinese lyrics, Male Singers, Movie soundtracks, Pinyin lyrics) (, )

In 2000, Taiwanese rock star Wu Bai appeared in a Hong Kong movie called Time and Tide (順流逆流) and recorded a few songs for its soundtrack. I have to admit I’ve never seen the film, but I’ve heard this song and really like the way it sounds. On top of that, it’s slow and the vocabulary is mostly easy – perfect for someone wanting to add an unusual (read: a little old and not incredibly popular, so people will think you really know your music) song to their KTV repertoire. Can’t believe I never thought to try it out at KTV before, but it’s on my list now.

And here’s a tip… if you want to sing it like Wu Bai, just perform the whole song with your mouth hanging open. Otherwise, drink a lot of alcohol first, and you’ll probably end up slurring your words just the right amount.

Movie Music: 菊花台 (Ju Hua Tai) by 周杰倫 (Zhou Jie Lun/Jay Chou)

January 18, 2010 at 7:38 pm (*** Difficult, Chinese lyrics, Male Singers, Movie soundtracks, Pinyin lyrics) (, , , )

More Jay Chou. This one is from the film Curse of the Golden Flower (滿城盡帶黃金甲), a visually spectacular film that was otherwise not very spectacular. Actually, this song was released on one of Jay Chou’s earlier albums, but was used in this 2006 film, and thus the video contains scenes from the movie. Pay attention to the scenes in the opening sequence, and you’ll see why this film was the most expensive Chinese film of all time at its release (though it has since been outdone by Red Cliff [赤壁]).

As for the singing difficulty, it’s a somewhat difficult tune in terms of vocabulary, but is definitely a hard one if you happen to be a man. Work on your falsetto, or leave the chorus to the ladies.

meng zai yuan fang  hua cheng yi lu:  xiang  sui feng piao san ni de mu yang

Chorus:

ju hua can man di shang  ni de xiao rong yi fan huang

hua luo ren duan chang wo xin shi jing jing tang

Movie Music: 不能說的秘密 (Bu Neng Shuo de Mi Mi) by 周杰倫 (Zhou Jie Lun/Jay Chou)

January 18, 2010 at 4:16 pm (** Medium, Chinese lyrics, Male Singers, Movie soundtracks, Pinyin lyrics) (, , , )

Next in the soundtrack series is another song from Jay Chou. There will be a number of Jay Chou soundtrack pieces, of course, since he has scored several films in recent years.

While the instrumental pieces are arguably the most fabulous part of Jay Chou’s soundtrack to his 2007 film Secret (不能說的秘密), this title song is quite catchy, not to mention fairly easy to sing. It might even be a decent song for a KTV newbie to learn, though some of the vocabulary is a little advanced. Even better, the background music is rather simple, so it would be a good song to try out if you’re interested in showing off your singing and piano playing at the same time.

And if you haven’t seen Secret, you’re really missing out. Jay Chou’s turn at writing, directing, and starring in his own film turned out far better than one might have predicted, and is nothing like the goofy flicks he normally participates in. Especially watch out for the piano battle near the beginning of the film. Impressive!

Like Cape No. 7 did in 2008, this film won Outstanding Taiwanese Film of the Year at the 2007 Golden Horse Awards. Furthermore, this song won Best Original Film Song, beating out Sodagreen’s 小情歌 (which was featured in the film Exit No. 6, a silly movie shot in my neighborhood).

PS: Be sure to check out Jay Chou in his Hollywood debut this year, when he will star as Kato in The Green Hornet with Seth Rogen and Cameron Diaz. I can’t say I expect anything amazing, but it’s a great chance to expose America to Jay Chou, and thus to Taiwan’s music industry.

Although Van Fan was a singer before the hit movie Cape No. 7 (海角七號), it was only with the success of this 2008 film that he really skyrocketed to fame. As a result, this song was playing all over Taipei, in stores, in clubs, by cover bands, and at KTV. It has an angry rockin’ quality that most other Taiwanese music doesn’t have.

Of course, the hype over both the movie and its star have since calmed down, but Van Fan is still out there making music with his band. Expect some new things from him in 2010.

Incidentally, besides containing scenes from Cape No. 7, this video was shot on the road that swings around Taiwan’s most southern reaches. If you visit Kenting, rent a scooter and head south on the main road out of town and you’ll end up where this video was filmed. It’s a nice drive with breathtaking views, so take a camera! You can also head back north to Hengchun and see some of the locations featured in Cape No. 7.

xiang shou jin xia tian de re     chuan yue tiao xing fu de he

you he bu ke    wo xiang xie ge

Chorus:

dang tian shi kong de  di shi gan de

wo yao wei ni   dao jin kuang re

rang ni feng kuang  rang ni ke

rang quan shi jie zhi dao   ni shi wo de

tian qi feng le  hai shui gun le

suo yi wo yao  wu le bu zuo

bu yao lang fei  mei yi ke kuai le

dang meng de tian xing zhe

xiang ni zhe yang de tian shi   gai you chi bang he ming zi

gai mei li zhong dai zhe ci   gai hen ren zhen de shu yu wo yi ci

Repeat chorus 1x

dang tian shi kong de  di shi gan de

wo yao wei ni   dao jin kuang re

rang ni feng kuang  rang ni ke

rang quan shi jie zhi dao   ni shi wo de

shi jie mo ri jiu jin guan lai ba

wo hui ji xu  wu le bu zuo

bu yao lang fei  ai ni de kuai le

Blog vacation over!

January 18, 2010 at 1:36 pm (Notes)

This blog seems to have experienced a jump in traffic recently, though I can’t imagine why, since I’ve been an absent blogger for so long. The past year has been a busy one, filled with lots of things to distract me from my true love in life: going to KTV. As such, I didn’t keep up with new music nearly as much in 2009 as I had in the past.

In any case, your visits, comments, and e-mails remind me that KTV小姐 is valuable to people who want to a) discover new music, b) learn Chinese, and/or c) be able to rock at KTV. I’m always looking to do all three, so writing these posts is just as valuable to me as it is to whoever comes across the blog randomly.

That said, stay tuned for new songs and videos! The next few posts will be dedicated to songs from my favorite Taiwanese films (another passion of mine – perhaps I’ll start a blog on those someday!). Hope you enjoy them.
