Another popular selection for contestants on shows like One Million Star (超級星光大道) and Super Idol (超級偶像) is this song, whose title translates literally to “You Are My Eyes.” Although a version by newcomer Yoga Lin (林宥嘉) circulated after his turn as a competitor on One Million Star, it’s the original artist, blind singer-songwriter Ricky Hsiao, who has the emotional force to carry this song. The video is a tearjerker, up there with Guang Liang‘s “Tong Hua” (童話), one of those that it’s hard to look away from when you’re watching. (It’s also kind of important to pay attention in order to understand the story, which cuts back and forth in time.)
The lyrics are mildly difficult, with a few faster moments, but the belty chorus is also likely to cause trouble for those who can’t belt on key. For the sake of your audience, keep in mind that singing loudly does not always equate to singing well!

JJ Lin (林俊傑) was awfully clever to cover this popular song, which he originally wrote for A-Mei (張惠妹) in 2001. A-Mei’s version still tops the charts at KTV, even 10 years later, and the song is also a popular choice for competitors on Taiwan’s ubiquitous idol shows. Sure, the song has already been covered by such big names as Khalil Fong (方大同) and Jam Hsiao (蕭敬騰), but Lin’s voice has the strength to carry the song that Fong’s does not, and Hsiao’s unique sound is a mismatch for the quiet sadness of A-Mei’s classic (not to mention the drums in Hsiao’s version are a bit much). It’s a challenge to remake a song whose original is so popular, but Lin has managed it quite well.
Learners of Chinese will find this song to be only moderately challenging. It does require a solid foundation for common characters, but there are few difficult words/characters in the song. As for the vocals, the lower key of JJ Lin’s version is manageable for both men and women, but women can consider trying out A-Mei’s version for a challenge. Below are both versions. Enjoy!

Though I’m still updating 5 Days in Taipei with my adventures in May, that’s no excuse to keep neglecting the all-important KTV. A recent visit to Taipei by my Dutch friend Anna (whose guest posts you can find here) has reminded me of this essential fact of life in Taiwan, as well as the fact that I have yet to accomplish my goal of being able to sing Jay Chou’s 牛仔很忙. Pity.
I have, fortunately, learned some other great songs this year, and this one by Sam Lee is one of my favorites. I love songs with KTV or music metaphors, like K歌之王 by Eason Chan or 不完整的旋律 by Wang Leehom, and this song meets that perfectly, since every KTV has a 切歌 button like this one:

I also appreciate that Lee is a 37-year-old performer competing against legions of younger rivals and still producing some really powerful music. Besides the awesome vocals, the lyrics to this song – the chorus in particular – are heartwrenching and sweet.** In terms of difficulty, I’d say this one is up there both vocally and lyrics-wise. The vocal range is a bit of a stretch; the song begins too low for most women to comfortably sing, but the final notes are a bit high for most men. Fortunately, if you’re actually going to a KTV to sing, you can change the key to fit your own range. The song is fairly slow, but the bridge has an especially difficult tongue-twisting section that I have yet to master. It’s doable with some practice, however.
I do have one particular request when it comes to this song, which is that, if you’re going to sing it, you must belt it with everything you’ve got. Please? This song wasn’t written to be mumbled. Sing it the way it was meant to be, and your KTV companions will thank you.

In my opinion, 愛錯 is one of Wang Leehom’s most amazing pieces. From his 2004 album 心中的日月, which also contained the hit Forever Love, Ai Cuo includes some of his most powerful singing on any album. I’m sure there will come a time when the now 33-year-old Leehom won’t be able to sing this song anymore (think Whitney Houston’s recent performances), but he still had it going on for his 2008 Music Man tour (part of a vocally challenging 3-hour concert, mind you! If you can manage to sing this song well, good on you. The song is slow, but the vocabulary and vocal difficulty make it a little harder for a beginner. The range isn’t easy to cover for most people – in fact, I tend to ask a male friend to sing the beginning for me, as it is quite low for a woman. Extra points for getting all the non-chorus flourishes toward the end of the song. (Note: background chorus is in parentheses)

If I were ever to come across my KTV-loving soul mate somewhere out in cyberspace, he’d probably have a KTV blog named after this Eason Chan classic, which translates to “King of KTV“. This song is a favorite among most of my male Taiwanese friends, very likely because it’s not very vocally challenging (quite low for most of the song), and because it’s fun to sing a song about expressing your feelings through KTV while you’re actually at KTV.
The video offers great cultural insights, too. For those who have never been to a KTV, you get a decent glimpse into a KTV room and can see how it differs from western-style karaoke. And if you do actually sing this at KTV, the video can feel a bit like a mirror, particular if you’ve got rowdy friends and no one ever pays attention to your singing. (For a KTV-lover, the end of this video is just about as heartbreaking as the ones where the girl dies!)
In terms of Chinese difficulty, the vocabulary could be considered high beginner, though the song gets more difficult at the end because the final lyrics are a bit sped up. Still, highly recommended for beginners to learn, especially if you’re a guy and want to hear all of your friends say “You know this song? Wow, you must really love KTV!”

In 2000, Taiwanese rock star Wu Bai appeared in a Hong Kong movie called Time and Tide (順流逆流) and recorded a few songs for its soundtrack. I have to admit I’ve never seen the film, but I’ve heard this song and really like the way it sounds. On top of that, it’s slow and the vocabulary is mostly easy – perfect for someone wanting to add an unusual (read: a little old and not incredibly popular, so people will think you really know your music) song to their KTV repertoire. Can’t believe I never thought to try it out at KTV before, but it’s on my list now.
And here’s a tip… if you want to sing it like Wu Bai, just perform the whole song with your mouth hanging open. Otherwise, drink a lot of alcohol first, and you’ll probably end up slurring your words just the right amount.

More Jay Chou. This one is from the film Curse of the Golden Flower (滿城盡帶黃金甲), a visually spectacular film that was otherwise not very spectacular. Actually, this song was released on one of Jay Chou’s earlier albums, but was used in this 2006 film, and thus the video contains scenes from the movie. Pay attention to the scenes in the opening sequence, and you’ll see why this film was the most expensive Chinese film of all time at its release (though it has since been outdone by Red Cliff [赤壁]).
As for the singing difficulty, it’s a somewhat difficult tune in terms of vocabulary, but is definitely a hard one if you happen to be a man. Work on your falsetto, or leave the chorus to the ladies.

Next in the soundtrack series is another song from Jay Chou. There will be a number of Jay Chou soundtrack pieces, of course, since he has scored several films in recent years.
While the instrumental pieces are arguably the most fabulous part of Jay Chou’s soundtrack to his 2007 film Secret (不能說的秘密), this title song is quite catchy, not to mention fairly easy to sing. It might even be a decent song for a KTV newbie to learn, though some of the vocabulary is a little advanced. Even better, the background music is rather simple, so it would be a good song to try out if you’re interested in showing off your singing and piano playing at the same time.
And if you haven’t seen Secret, you’re really missing out. Jay Chou’s turn at writing, directing, and starring in his own film turned out far better than one might have predicted, and is nothing like the goofy flicks he normally participates in. Especially watch out for the piano battle near the beginning of the film. Impressive!
Like Cape No. 7 did in 2008, this film won Outstanding Taiwanese Film of the Year at the 2007 Golden Horse Awards. Furthermore, this song won Best Original Film Song, beating out Sodagreen’s 小情歌 (which was featured in the film Exit No. 6, a silly movie shot in my neighborhood).
PS: Be sure to check out Jay Chou in his Hollywood debut this year, when he will star as Kato in The Green Hornet with Seth Rogen and Cameron Diaz. I can’t say I expect anything amazing, but it’s a great chance to expose America to Jay Chou, and thus to Taiwan’s music industry.

Although Van Fan was a singer before the hit movie Cape No. 7 (海角七號), it was only with the success of this 2008 film that he really skyrocketed to fame. As a result, this song was playing all over Taipei, in stores, in clubs, by cover bands, and at KTV. It has an angry rockin’ quality that most other Taiwanese music doesn’t have.
Of course, the hype over both the movie and its star have since calmed down, but Van Fan is still out there making music with his band. Expect some new things from him in 2010.
Incidentally, besides containing scenes from Cape No. 7, this video was shot on the road that swings around Taiwan’s most southern reaches. If you visit Kenting, rent a scooter and head south on the main road out of town and you’ll end up where this video was filmed. It’s a nice drive with breathtaking views, so take a camera! You can also head back north to Hengchun and see some of the locations featured in Cape No. 7.

Another guest post by Anna, with apologies to her for taking so long to get this up. I’ll be using this post to learn the song myself, as I see it as the Mt. Everest of Chinese songs and am determined to conquer it someday. In line with that, I’ve added a new level of difficulty: “Damn near impossible.” Here’s Anna’s advice on how to master this song:
Jay Chou never smiles, but this song (and its music video) shows that he does have a sense of humor. At first I didn’t believe it was even possible to sing this song in karaoke, but then I heard a friend of a friend sing it, and thought: if he can do it, then I can learn it too; I’ll be the first foreigner to master this song, and much admiration will be my part. But by the time I did master it, it didn’t seem such an amazing feat anymore.
The key here is knowing the song by heart. There’s no time to read the characters as they appear on the screen, the speed is just too high, you have to know what’s coming before Jay sings it. The other key is to pronounce only half of most of the words, just slur everything together like Jay does, otherwise there’s just no way you can sing fast enough.
There’s one line of Taiwanese in it, I’ll romanize it in POJ. And there’s a Taiwanese accent: Jay pronounces 日記 riji with an L, producing something like lh-ji.
And here’s the video. Watch the instrumental part in the middle: I’ve worn exactly such a dress. Twice in my life. On fairs held in Taipei to promote Dutch education and Dutch flowers, respectively. On these occasions, I borrowed a dress from the Dutch representative office, and I suspect that’s where the costume designer of this video got them, too.
